Tips For Cleaning and Maintaining Your Stand Mixer

When baking cookies or making bread dough for a big batch, it’s essential to keep your stand mixer in top condition. Regular cleaning will ensure that it lasts long and performs as expected.
1. Wipe down the bowl and attachments
Stand mixers make baking and cooking a breeze, enabling you to whip up pillowy brioche, towering peaks of stiff meringue, expansive spreads of focaccia or decadent buttercream frosting with ease. However, they also need occasional care and upkeep in order to stay in top condition.
Regular cleaning of bowl, flat beater, wire whisk and dough hook attachments is recommended. These should be hand-washed in hot soapy water and thoroughly dried before storing away.
To clean the bowl of your stand mixer, take it and all attachments off. Dampen a sponge or cloth with warm water and wipe down the bowl, being sure to get into all corners.
If your mixing bowl is made of stainless steel, it will likely need regular cleaning. A mixture of vinegar and baking soda can help remove stains, rust and other residues from the surface.
You can also put the mixing bowl in the dishwasher to wash it. Just remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and select the correct cycle.
You can also give your stand mixer a once-over with a toothbrush to get rid of any food stuck in hard-to-reach places, such as ports on the back of the mixing head and vent holes located at its base.
2. Clean the motor head
If you use your mixer frequently, it is essential to clean it regularly. Doing this ensures your machine remains in top condition so you can whip up delicious cookies, fluffy marshmallows or fluffy egg whites for meringues whenever desired.
After each use, wipe down the body of your stand mixer with a damp dish towel or microfiber cloth to prevent gunk from accumulating in crevices and corners. Doing this also keeps the motor head from becoming clogged with dirt.
Spray the motor head with Simple Green and then scrub it gently with a brush or sponge, including its outer rim and any residue beneath. Another area that needs cleaning is the beater shaft, which can collect dust and other ingredients over time. To eliminate this build-up, fold a damp sponge around its circumference and twist your hand back and forth to loosen any grime from its coils.
If the bottom of your mixer’s beater shaft appears especially dirty, try taking a dry toothbrush and gently cleaning the round crevice with it. This area often collects drips, so be sure to thoroughly clean it after each use.
3. Clean the ventilation shaft
The ventilation shaft of a stand mixer is an important area to clean and maintain. Not only does this allow air flow to the motor, but it also collects dirt and grime.
Maintain the cleanliness of vents around your home by wiping them down once or twice a month with either a cotton swab or toothbrush. Dip these into a water-baking soda mixture and scrub away at the dirt before wiping it dry.
Another useful tip is to use a dry brush to sweep away dirt and debris from the motor head’s ridges and vent holes at the back. Doing so helps prevent food from getting stuck inside and damaging the motor.
It’s essential to regularly clean the bowl-clamping plate on the base of a mixer. This collects many drips from ingredients and must be wiped down with a cloth.
Finally, inspect and clean your mixer’s non-slip foot pads if necessary. It may be best to do this while the machine is upside down.

4. Clean the base of the stand

Finally, inspect your electrical cord and non-slip foot pads for any stains or dust. These parts become harder to wipe clean if left on the stand so regularly inspect them for signs of deterioration.
5. Clean the non-slip foot pads
If you have a stand mixer with a bowl, it’s important to clean it regularly. Use either a damp cloth or toothbrush to wipe down the base of the bowl and underside of the head, plus give those non-slip foot pads an effective scrub for fresh countertops all year round!

6. Clean the electrical cord
Your stand mixer’s electrical cord can become dirty and disorganized over time, potentially leading to malfunction or breakage of the mixer. To help avoid this from occurring, clean the cord regularly.
Before beginning to clean the electrical cord on your mixer, first unplug it from the outlet. Doing this will prevent it from getting tangled or creating other issues.
Next, remove the rear housing cover from your mixer’s back. Doing so will expose its power cord wiring and enable you to quickly take it apart.
The cord contains three wires that connect to the mixer’s electronic control plate: two motor wires (one black, one white) and a ground wire. To access their terminals, use needle-nose pliers to loosen each connector on these wires.
You may use a pair of wire strippers to remove the insulation from these wires, but be careful so as not to cut through any wires while doing so.
Once the old cord has been taken out, installing a replacement one is effortless. The replacement cord features built-in strain relief that slides into an available slot at the back of your mixer.
Once the new cord has been installed, you can re-install the back housing cover to complete the repair. It’s an easy step that will restore your stand mixer back to full working order – just remember to clean it regularly to prevent food debris or dirt accumulation!
